Flexion/Distraction - This is a technique used for patients with lumbar disc degeneration, lumbar spinal stenosis, or lumbar disc herniations. Discs require the motion of the vertebrae above and below them to effectively pump nutrients into the cells of the disc, and pump waste products out of it. If the vertebrae don't move, the discs dry out leading to disc degeneration. Flexion/distraction allows Dr. Johnson to create this pumping motion at specific levels of the lumbar spine after the adjustment has been performed to allow fluid to flow into and out of the cells of the discs. It also causes a negative pressure in the discs, allowing for reduction in the size of acute disc herniations.
Electrical muscle stimulation - This allows the muscles to relax after an adjustment, allowing the adjustment to hold for a longer period of time. It can also aid with inflammation and pain relief.
Ultrasound - This creates vibration in the tissues it is applied to, causing increased fluid flow, improved blood flow, and speeds healing.
Therapeutic exercise instruction - Once the initial acute phase of treatment is past, Dr. Johnson will often show the patient exercises to do at home on a regular basis to prevent the problem from recurring, or reduce the frequency of flare-ups in the case of chronic issues.
